Haiti :: Special Report

With roughly 50 orphans forced to sleep outdoors, Barbara Walker spends her days
at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince fighting for the children’s salvation
a visa out of the earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

The orphanage is in such disrepair that no one is using the buildings.
Food and water supplies are dwindling and fuel is scarce.

"One more earthquake and my children might all die," Walker says.

The situation is dire for the 350,000 orphans in the Port-au-Prince area and potential parents here in the U.S. are frantic. Many of the children have been legally adopted and
they are simply waiting for visas. One couple on Merritt Island is awaiting three
children from Walker's orphanage. Time is running out.

COMING SUNDAY IN FLORIDA TODAY: SAVING THE CHILDREN
Barbara Walker, runs the Ruuska Village orphanage and arranges adoptions for Haitian children. This Sunday in FLORIDA TODAY, reporter John Torres, narrates a compelling – and very personal – account of his experience at the orphanage in Haiti, and the local families who are reaching out to adopt these children.

John A. Torres spent four days in Haiti immediately after the earthquake and has reported before on disasters in Indonesia, New Orleans, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He has traveled to Haiti four times, twice for FLORIDA TODAY and twice for humanitarian work.
